This is a writing bundle that will help prepare your students for the state writing assessments. In this bundle you will be receiving 2 authentic letters written by a Union and Confederate soldier. These letters are ideal to use as a compare and contrast writing activity with your students. A graphic organizer has been included that will guide your students through highlighting important portions of the text that would be useful to compare and contrast the supplies available and conditions during the war. A prompt using the language found in common core writing assessments has also been included.
Whether this is the first time your students have written a compare and contrast essay, or it is their first; these materials will be useful in your writers' workshop activities.
To really get your students excited about the letters you could burn the edges or soak them in tea to give them an antique look. Then, put them in envelopes for your students to open as they begin the writing activity. The language found within the letters may require you to teach some vocabulary and meaning as you go through the texts. This bundle could be used over the course of several days. This is a great way to incorporate writing into your Social Studies curriculum.
