This webquest is a PDF document that has a colorful background. There is also a black and white version included in the document. The webquest is split into five parts:
Part One: Civil War Medical Care
Part Two: Walt Whitman: Civil War Carnage
Part Three: Walt Whitman Hospital Notebook “At Antietam”
Part Four Important Inventions: Gatling Gun
Part Five: Important Inventions: The Telegraph
This webquest provides students an opportunity to read information on medical care, first-hand accounts by Walt Whitman, the Gatling Gun, and the utilization and expansion of the telegraph.
Each section has a QR code that students can scan with a device. The QR code will immediately take them to a webpage with which they can gather the information needed to answer the questions on the webquest.
**For each part, there is only one QR code. That means all the pages in Part One will have the same QR code at the top. I explained this to my students before starting the webquest so they would know that they didn't have to scan every page in every part. I did like that it was there. If they accidentally exited the webpage, they could easily get it back.**
***How I Used This Webquest***
This webquest was used with my 5th graders to extend upon what we learned about the Civil War during our unit with our district social studies materials and textbook. I wanted to provide students with a better understanding of the war and the conditions for the soldiers, as well as the advancements in technology due to the war.
Students worked independently or in pairs using a QR scanner on their iPad to locate the text and complete the information in the webquest. This worked as our reading, writing, and social studies lesson. Students took two class periods to complete the webquest.
