Students discuss the reasons the Civil War divided families by creating a dialogue between parents and their 3 sons. One son has enlisted with the Union, the other is a Confederate soldier, and the third son is undecided. Through the course of a discussion over dinner, the 3rd son will be persuaded by one of his brothers to join with the North or South. The instructions clearly explain how each son must present and explain his case, the role the parents have in the conversation, and how other pre-Civil War and Civil War events will play into the conversation (such as the Underground Railroad and John Brown's Raid). The rubric is included but the point values are blank to accommodate your own grading systems.
