Events Leading to the Civil War Structured Debate

Students will learn about the events leading to the Civil War through a primary source visual and reading. Each event is examined through a provocative question which students discuss in a small group, then debate in the entire class. Students complete the activity by writing an essay answering different questions.

-AND-

Events Leading to the Civil War Readings

Don’t have time for a debate – all of the readings with additional questions are included!

Events Leading to the Civil War

In this activity, students will create summaries of the different events leading to the Civil War. Once their summaries are created, they will create a Human Timeline by posting their placard (slide from the PowerPoint) and sharing their summary with the class. After you have reviewed the events in chronological order, you can lead a class discussion by creating a Human Spectrum – Which of these events was the most important leading to the Civil War? The least?

-AND-

The Civil War through QR Codes

Your students will analyze primary source images about the specific events during the Civil War and then they will use QR Codes to watch a video and answer questions. Your students can use their smart phones and headsets for this portion of the activity. After watching the video and discussing questions with a partner, they will annotate a map with the key events of the Civil War.

-AND-

Civil War Puzzle

Review the key information on the Civil War with a puzzle.

Reconstruction
Did Reconstruction accomplish its goals? Were African Americans granted the rights given in the 13th, 14th and 15th Amendments? In this activity students will examine the Reconstruction time period through primary source images, quotes and text. Students will discuss the topic - Is everyone in the United States free?

Reconstruction Review Activity

This is a Reconstruction activity to promote higher level thinking during reviews. In the "Odd One Out" students are given primary source images from which they have to analyze and develop patterns. Once they have detected the pattern, they have to identify which image is the "Odd One Out" - doesn't fit the pattern. Students are then required to write justification statements on their answer.

-AND-

Civil War and Reconstruction Dominos This is a fun game for students to use to review for an end of unit assessment.
