In 2nd Grade, we study the Civil War, so we read Civil War on Sunday by Mary Pope Osborne. The first year, I had them draw the visualizations they saw in their brains as I read aloud. The next year, the addition of notes was positive, but they needed some structure.
This sheet was printed and then cut into little books for each of the 10 chapters. It helped them have discussions as we talked about the text and what they learned about the Civil War and Clara Barton.
It took us about a week to get through the 10 chapters, doing two per day; however, you may need two weeks if you don't have the time to commit that long to the reading of the book.
