The following is a rubric for a project on civilizations. Students typically have learned about the ancient and classical civilizations before reaching the high school World History class. Rather than waste valuable instructional time going over those civilizations, students have to research an assigned civilization and present the information to the class. This method allows the class to quickly review those civilizations and the 6 characteristics of civilization (cities, government, writing, art, religion, social organization). Students also have to use artifacts and primary sources to prove their society meets those 6 characteristics. For example, a student assigned to prove Egypt met the writing characteristic could not simply say that the Egyptians used hieroglyphics. The student would need to provide evidence such as a picture of hieroglyphics or even mention the Rosetta Stone.
I usually allow students to form groups of 6 people and then I assign them a civilization. The students then pick a characteristic to research.
