Claims and Evidence: Argumentative Writing | Literary Analysis

These DIGITAL and PRINT activities will help your students understand the difference between a claim and a statement, be able to identify and find strong and logical evidence from a text to support their claims, and organize their essays in a clear and concise fashion. Practice with claims and evidence are two MAJOR components of literary analysis and argumentative writing and are critical ideas that students need to understand!

We've used these exact activities with our students in grades 5-8 and have seen great improvements in their essay writing as a result of practicing these skills!

• INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE: We walk you through exactly how to effectively use and implement this resource in your classroom.
• IDENTIFYING AND WRITING CLAIMS: Students work through a series of sentences identifying whether or not they are claims or statements. Take this activity a step further and ask your students to justify their reasoning! Students also practice writing their own statements and claims.
• FINDING THE RIGHT EVIDENCE: Students are given a claim and four pieces of evidence. Students must identify which pieces of evidence best support the claim and why. TWO examples provided - one for argumentative writing and one for literary analysis.
• EVIDENCE TRACKER: This is one of our best-selling resources! This graphic organizer helps students track evidence that supports a claim as they work their way through a piece of text. Can be used with any literary piece. This also includes two different levels of student examples.
• EDITABLE ESSAY GRAPHIC ORGANIZER: Each element of a standard argumentative essay is included in the graphic organizer, from the Introduction, to the Body Paragraphs, and the Conclusion. **This document comes as a PowerPoint file AND as a .pdf. In order to edit this document, you will need PowerPoint.**
