Clara Barton was a Humanitarian, teacher, nurse, and founder of the American Red Cross. During the Civil War, Clara Barton served as an independent nurse seeing combat and aiding soldiers at the Battles of Fredericksburg and Antietam where she earned the nickname Angel of the Battlefield. After the war, she worked for the War Department locating missing soldiers. In 1881, she lobbied successfully for an American branch of the Red Cross. She became its first president.
