Sticky Notes Class Birthday Graph is a great community building, interactive math activity for the beginning of the school year! It’s also fun to find a spot for it all year, as students love to reference it for birthdays. The Sticky Notes give every student a chance to practice reading the graph and stick on their birthdays! In this resource there are options to make the graph in color or black & white.
You will need: Post it notes (3 in x 3 in)- I used yellow ones but any color will work and chart paper (I've even just quickly put it up on the whiteboard for the lesson with the post its, then transferred to paper afterwards).
In this resource you will find:
Pages 4-5: Birthday Graph Lesson Plan
Pages 6-8: Title for the Graph in color or black & white
Page 9: Post it note template.
Pages 10-11: Black & White months of the year to create the graph (print on post it notes using the template page).
Pages 12-13: Color months of the year to create the graph (print on post it notes using the template page).
Pages 14-15: Numbers with ten frames to create the # of students on the graph (print on post it notes using the template page).
Pages 16-17: Numbers without ten frames to create the # of students on the graph
Page 18: Birthday Post Its with writing month/day. Students each would get one of these post its to write their birthday then decorate with crayons.
Page 19: Birthday Post Its for younger students. If your students may not be able to remember or write their month/day yet in the beginning of the year, then use this template to print the post its. Have students decorate it like a birthday card and have your students birthday information (pg. 22) so that you can help them when it comes time to place on the graph.
Page 20: Number of Students & Months of the Year labels for the graph
Page 21-22: Graph for students to use and a writing prompt. I copy these back to back, so that after we graph together, then students can turn over the page and write about their dream birthday!
