In this activity, students will use addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division skills to answer one very long story problem about a class picnic. Students will be asked to multiply money amounts by two digit numbers as well as to divide by two digit divisors. They will add and subtract decimal amounts as well. This problem solving tasks brings the math skills you are teaching to the real world with a practical application of the four basic operations. The solutions to one part of the problem are used later in the problem and build to a climax when students determine the complete cost of the class picnic, including food, transportation, and even decorations! Students will be challenged by the problems and will walk away realizing they can do more math than they might have believed possible.
