"Images worth a thousand words". Images are independent of student skill level because you will utilize these images for open-ended responses without time frame restrictions and to convey multiple opinions and messages. Images are a flexible tool so the teacher can designate the topic, conversation or quantity of words that may be needed in daily lessons. Images can also be used to introduce or reinforce your unit and your students will be inspired to learn and internalize words and expressions that are important to them in their discussions.
Instead of the transference generally associated with showing a word in one language and then translating it into the second language, avoid the transference by using images to stimulate word association and conversation. The brain is an amazing tool and can use images to help commit vocabulary to memory. Temple Grandin referred to it as “thinking in pictures”. What an enjoyable way to produce communication.
How many other ways can you think of to utilize these pictures? How many questions or statements can be created about the items? Students can use these images for simple identification or they can spiral into more complex communication and detail the benfits of using certain objects for a particular class activity. During your market unit, put the cards into your office supply store and students can use them in a purchase transaction. Maestra Mapache Creations has coordinated these thematic collections of images and vocabulary to be your versatile tool for both verbal and written activities. Put your valuable time back in your hands.

"Scaffolding" is the current terminology, however I like to refer to this educational strategy as "spiraling". The teacher provides the framework and examples of the activity and grammar and the students then reuse and recycle their prior knowledge while continually expanding with more complex structures. Students learn to take a more active role in their own learning and can be successful regardless of their skill level.
Note from Maestra Mapache: My classroom activities were primarily student directed and textbook vocabulary lists did not have a sufficient quantity or variety of terms that my students and I wanted in order to build and expand ideas. Too often, the activities were for rote memory exercises but, not sufficient for expanding into daily use. For this reason I developed my own glossaries and selected appropriate grammar based on learner level using the textbook as a support tool. Students were free to add and select the vocabulary that was more applicable to their own life had meaning beyond the textbook exercise.
As always, Maestra Mapache has first created these activities and used in her own classroom. Secondly these activities are designed to be adaptable to any of your lesson units and the vocabulary has been prepared with terminology to allow the teacher flexibility in lesson preparation.
Maestra Mapache Classroom Object Vocabulary was created first and then the clipart images coordinate as four sets of powerpoints for even greater variety of images. All of my classroom activity products coordinate to create a six week thematic unit or may be used as a individual activities. Maestra Mapache's Classroom Object Practice Worksheets links will be available soon.
