Product Description
This Class Race - Multiplying Binomials or Factoring Cards - PP was created by Pupsaroni Puzzles for use during the polynomials and factoring units in an Algebra 1 or Algebra 2 classroom.
In this set of cards, there are 24 products (trinomials) and 48 factors (binomials). Each card has a letter or double letter designation down in the right hand corner of the card for ease in grading or checking matches. There are several ways these cards can be used.
I used them as a class race which the students thoroughly enjoyed. We have 8-9 tables of 3 or 4 students in each class, so we just divided up as tables. Each group was assigned a color. I ran ALL of the cards in each color I was going to use, and cut them out ahead of time. Students can do this if you want them to cut them. I placed each set of one-color cards in a manila envelope and labeled the outside with which color was in the bag. I used dark green, yellow, dark purple, red, light green, light blue, light purple, light grey, and pink. To begin, each group chose a color. Once groups chose a color, I took their bags and dumped them in the center of the play area on the floor. (Ours was in the hallway because weather kept us inside). Empty bags were returned to the teams. Each teammate took turns running to get a piece from the center pile. For this activity, when I used it for factoring, I encouraged students to grab a trinomial as their first card. They had to take it back to their group and determine its factors. The next student would then run back to the pile and search for the factor card. Each student could only go from their home base and back with one card. When the correct trinomial and factor cards were matched together, one student could take that set to the teacher home base, where the teacher would quickly check the letter combinations to quickly make sure this was a valid match. If it was, that student would return to the student home base, and the students were allowed to put the set in their manila envelope. The next student headed back to the center pick pile to grab another trinomial and begin again. Table groups were in a race against other table groups. Prizes were given out for finishers and for first, second, and third place. Students worked together to come up with the factors and to work together to complete the task. This took a full 45 minute class period.
The same type of activity could be run with only 1 set of cards—much quicker, but less practice per group. This can be run in approximately 15 minutes. The whole class would not have to compete at once.
Another way these cards could be used would be as a group card sort at each table, or as an individual, duo, or group project at a station or center.
These cards can be used to practice multiplying binomials or to practice factoring. Either way, at the end of the day, students enjoy the race and leave class with a smile on their face.
