In responding to the questions in this file, the students get a better understanding of not only how they are learning, but why they are learning what they are learning. Thus they will be more motivated to learn, be more able to apply their learning in the future, and be able to take more ownership of their learning. The teacher, in turn, will have better insight into each student's thinking process. So as a formative assessment tool, it will aid the teacher in determining the best "next steps" for each student. It also gives the teacher an opportunity to identify misconceptions and understandings that may not have been clear in the work that the students produce.
The questions are formatted to be printed out for display. (See this page for some ideas of how to use them.) The file includes a black-and-white version as well as a full-color version. The introduction also provides some tips for how to use the questions in your lessons.
