Creating a set of class rules is something most teachers develop very early in the school year. I believe they are an essential component of every successful classroom. Life is governed by rules and we need to create the same atmosphere in our classrooms in order to prepare our students for the future. In my early days of teaching, I developed the rules and went over them with my students on the first day. I thought it was my job to set the rules and ensure the student were familiar with my expectations. My philosophy has changed over the years. Although I still believe guidelines are important, I think they are much more effective when the students help create them. I think we can even take it one step further, and use them to build character in our students.
