This product provides a 15 minute, thoroughly researched, illustrated talk on video dealing with the different levels in English society at the end of the 18th Century into the early 19th Century.
English social structure, rank, class and the laws governing the inheritance of property are dealt with in full.
Jane Austen's background and values are touched on as well as her attitude to the social system prevailing at the time.
I made this video to help students come to terms with the very different way society was ordered during Austen's lifetime. The talk uses examples from 'Persuasion' but the content largely deals with what it meant to be a member of the gentry, something which applies to all of her work.
My aim was to make these wonderful novels more accessible to our young readers. The video would be a great jumping off point for a wider consideration of our own society by comparison and I make an argument for the relevance of Jane Austen's books today.
A full transcript of the talk is also provided.
