Phyla project- explore the diversity of kingdoms. This is a mini research project in which students are assigned phyla in the plant and animal kingdoms to represent the diversity of each.
This does not take up lots of class time, but is effective at teaching students about classification and diversity. A quick 1 minute presentation is of each poster can be followed up for a class presentation on the kingdoms!
Student and teacher directions are included, as well as a list of animal and plant phyla for your convenience!!
(Should you prefer other kingdoms outside of the animalia and plantae, templates for all 6 kingdoms are included).
Students are assigned phyla and are instructed to choose one species to represent that phyla. With a little research your students make a mini poster with the following information:
☆ Phylum name meaning
☆ Defining characteristics of phylum
☆ Common name of phylum
☆ Taxonomy of chosen species
☆ Latin name of Chosen species
☆ Interesting facts
This is a fun, flexible, and effective way to familiarize students with classification and to also show them the diversity among the kingdoms.
