Description

This activity is a fun, creative exploration of how to make a dichotomous key. Students are given an example of a flow chart and a standard dichotomous key and they create their own using animals, dinosaurs, bugs, or any other dollar store organism variety pack! Students are encouraged to think outside of the box and create unique funny names for their organisms.

At the end of the activity, teachers can have students exchange animals and keys and test whether other groups are able to use their keys to discover the unique names for each creature. This is a great way to encourage collaboration between groups of students (and also an easy way to evaluate the keys! If a key doesn’t work, everyone in the class will know that “Sally” isn’t a salamander after all…)
