THE CLOSE READING PASSAGES
Each topic covered comes with a close reading passage for the students to read and engage with. Key science vocabulary has been indicated in bold print. In addition, other vocabulary is marked in each passage to direct students to consider word meaning, make inferences, and contemplate the author’s purpose, text structure, and the main idea of the writing.
**Each passage provides a variety of information on the given topic. The information is not exhaustive and it is not meant to replace all of your current science curriculum or instruction. It is, however, a great way to present information on many science topics and integrate your science and ELA instruction.
Each and every passage come with teacher notes as well as discussion and text-dependent questions that fuel class discussions and drive students back to the text to read closely and grapple with the information presented.
The questions for each passage fall into the categories of science content, and reading and language arts.
Science Content – Sample Questions
1. In what organelle does photosynthesis take place?
2. What are two conditions that must be met for a plant to geminate?
Reading and Language Arts – Sample Questions
1. What is the third paragraph MOSTLY about?
2. What word from the last sentence could be replaced with the word "made" without changing the meaning?
3. What text structure is use in the 2nd paragraph?
Every single passage includes a short pre-assessment for you to give your students to assess prior-knowledge and give you a launching point for your lesson. In addition, you will also receive a unit assessment with questions assessing the students understanding of the science content from all of the passages for this unit.
