Product Description
This is a classification activity you can do with your students. It is designed to accompany the Tumble Science Podcast for Kids episode "The Case of the Sparkly Mineral," which discusses the DANA classification system, and classification systems in general.

The podcast episode is available for free here: https://beta.prx.org/stories/228887

You can purchase an ad-free version with transcript here: http://www.sciencepodcastforkids.com/product-page/the-case-of-the-sparkly-mineral-episode-with-transcript

You can use the activity to help students develop their own classification system using a bunch of random objects. Give the students a large collection of items to choose from. Start by having them observe each item carefully, recording its size, weight, and more. Then have them start to group the items based on shared traits. These could be size, use, color, or however they would like to classify.

The intention of this activity is to help students understand how various things are organized in the world of science. How do we group items according to shared traits? There's no better way to understand than to do it yourself.
