Classification and Kingdoms SPEED DebATING Activity
Kingdoms are usually a fun thing for students to learn, but the vocabulary can be so overwhelming that it becomes difficult to analyze text in order to classify organisms. This activity provides a themed challenge approach to classifying organisms into different kingdoms.
This does require a little bit of set-up (mostly laminating, cutting, and setting up desks or tables in pairs). But, once set-up, it can easily accommodate 28 students through multiple class periods. Just like speed dating, students will rotate through different partners around the room. Each partner group will have access to a station with a mysterious organism's "online" dating profile. Using this profile, they will analyze pictures and text for pertinent vocabulary and apply this knowledge to decide to which kingdom the organism belongs.
A recording handout is included with this package so students can track which stations they've visited. There are several options for set-up discussed in the teacher guide, but I prefer two sets of students (sets A and B) each with 7 available stations for speed debate rotations. The organisms are purposefully a little strange so as to insight meaningful discourse and debate among student pairs.
The information provided is targeted to an 7th-9th grade on-level life science course. The details are not deep enough to be suitable for an AP style course. Additionally, I've included some extension ideas you can try depending on how your class is set up. The Teacher Guide
includes these suggestions (create your own organism profile, Valentine card, etc.)!
- Teacher Guide
- Speed Debating Report
- Editable Templates
- Station Cards for the Table
- Public Domain Image Profile Cards
- Teacher Key
A non-editable version as well as an editable template version are included in the package. Pick and choose the components that work best for your students' needs!
