In this fun activity, students closely observe 18 different species of "animalcule", and group them based on their physical traits. Students also can use their imagination coming up with names for the groups (genus) and the members (species), so they can label each with their scientific names.
This activity can be done as an Engagement at the beginning of a unit about classifying organisms or taxonomy. At the end of the activity, students will understand that similar organisms are grouped into a genus, which is composed of 1 or more species. They will also understand that a scientific name is composed of an organism's genus name and species name.
