This is a great lab activity to reinforce elements, compounds, and mixtures (Classification of Matter). It is geared for middle school and possibly high school (you may edit to make it more challenging). The students love doing this and it is good to get them up and out of their seats. They may work in pairs of by themselves - that is up to you.
* Teacher set up information with sample slides.
* Student data collection sheets/directions
* Answer Key
* Pictures of some of my stations to use as a reference
* Editable Word document
The lab document is editable so you may edit it to fit the needs of you and your students.
The lab consist of 16 stations that I put around the classroom. I use stick models to create the molecular models, but I have also seen teachers use gumdrops and toothpicks.
On day one students rotate through the different stations making observational drawings of the models.
On day two they use a color coded key (included) to identify the models from each station. They will classify the station as either an element, compound, or a mixture along with other information.
