Classifying Matter

This lab activity is best introduced by first allowing students to explore with graduated cylinders. Each student group should be given a graduated cylinder filled with water, as well as objects for displacing the water to create a new total volume. The goal of this activity is for students to understand that the amount of displaced water from the object being inserted reveals the volume of the inserted object. After a few minutes of student-led discovery, the teacher should model this experiment. If lab supplies are available, this activity serves as an extension or assessment of their understanding. However, if supplies are not available, this activity serves as a perfect substitute, guiding students through a modeled practice and independent practice. During the modeled practice, the teacher should project the blank student page on the screen or smart board. Using the template, the teacher can model before and after cylinders. The teacher can create their own example, or they can project the page of this PowerPoint labeled “Teacher Example.” After teachers have thoroughly modeled, students draw their own before and after cylinders with a random object inserted in the second cylinder. It is important to make sure the water level of the second cylinder is higher than the first (which shows the water has been displaced) . The students can choose random before and after numbers--what matters most is that they get the math correct with whichever numbers they use. The primary goals of this lesson are as follows:

1. Students should be able to correctly identify the value of each hash mark on the cylinder (5 grams)

2. Students need to be able to understand that the volume of an inserted object is the total volume (with the inserted object) minus the total volume before the object was inserted.

3. Student should be able to demonstrate correct computation
