In 2014, I began searching for an interesting new way to launch discussions about metaphors we encounter in our reading or metaphors we explore through our writing.
The first page of this packet explains and introduces the metaphor classification system I created for launching discussions about metaphors. The six pages that follow share six different poems with prominent metaphors--each poem a little more challenging than the one it follows--that I roll out over six or seven weeks, stopping when the poem is too challenging for a particular group of students.
When we discuss any metaphor in class afterwards, we always start the discuss with the classification system that's been introduced, and then we consider alternative metaphors that might have worked that would fall into the different categories. Our discussions about metaphors have become so smart since I introduced this discussion technique--not to mention my kids are experts now on the difference between concrete and abstract nouns.
Enjoy this free discussion tool. Leave good feedback if you find it useful in any way to your teaching! Thanks.
