This unit aligns with CCSS 5.G.3 and 5.G.4. These activities help students understand that attributes belonging to a category of 2D figures can also belong to all sub-categories of that category. Students will also understand that 2D figures can be classified in a hierarchy based on properties.
Day 1- Give students the quadrilateral examples and graphic organizer. Students will describe the quadrilaterals and take notes in the graphic organizer while thinking about: How many sides? What kind of sides? (opposite, congruent, adjacent, parallel, perpendicular, intersecting) How many angles? What kinds of angles? (obtuse, right, acute).
Day 2-Review hierarchy with class and allow them to make the connections based on the properties they came up with in their graphic organizer. Students create a hierarchy of their own with examples of the shapes and the basic properties of each of the quadrilaterals.
Day 3- Students answer the questions on Quadrilateral Fun.
Day 4- Students answer the questions on the Quadrilateral! sheet as a review for the quiz.
Day 5- Students take the Quadrilateral Quiz.
