The Common Core standards require students to classify polygons by their properties. Students cut out the various quadrilaterals and classify(sort) them by their properties onto different work mats.
There are four different work mats. The first requires students to classify by the properties of parallel sides. The second requires them to classify by how many congruent sides, and the third has them classify by types of angles. The fourth mat finishes by having them classify by the quadrilateral names: quadrilateral, rhombus, parallelogram, square, trapezoid, and rectangle. This in an inquiry work mat, since the names are not given ahead of time, but can be as an adaptation.
