Get your students up out of their seats and talking to their new classmates!
*No prep time
*Involves movement around room
*Students speak to everyone in the class (not just their BFFs)
I'm always looking for a fun way to get my students excited during the first day of school in between practicing routines and going over procedures. Classmate Quest gives students a reason to have conversations with, and learn more about, ALL of their classmates in a non-intimidating way. Great for your students who prefer to keep to themselves, and for the students who are the opposite!
Students go on a mission to ask each classmate one question on their board. The catch: they cannot ask any student more than one question. This forces (in a good way!!) students to talk to everyone! The questions range from super silly, to common "favorite" questions, and some that really make you think.
*Best part for us teachers: The first column contains only school-related questions that provide insight into your students' likes, dislikes, strengths, weaknesses and preferences in the classroom!
I use this activity on the first day of school AND the last day of school! It's amazing to see how much more comfortable your kiddos are with each other, and how many times you'll hear, "WOW, all this time and I didn't know that about you!" It's really fun to wrap up your wonderful year the same way it started!
You're sure to hear your students discussing this activity after it's over. And you're bound to hear someone ask a friend "When I say 'salad' what is the first word that comes to mind?" (haha!)
