This is a guide on how to stage a structured debate in an intermediate elementary school classroom. After researching many different formats, I created this template and plan and have since run many successful debates following this format.
In this guide I include the planning sheet for the teacher to note down the topic statement, to divide his/her class into two teams, and to assign two or three judges who will sit out from the debate but help judge and evaluate students during the preparation process and during the actual debate.
I also include some pointers for the teacher on how to prepare the class, the minute by minute breakdown of the ~75 minute debate, a take-home student preparation package, and an evaluation sheet that can be used by the teacher (or by the panel of judges?) to evaluate the students and to give feedback.
Come up with some captivating and controversial topic statements and enjoy!
