In the age of fake news and internet trolls, recognizing and employing logical arguments is more important than ever. Structured classroom debates are an excellent way to help students do that.
This editable resource will enable you to hold a classroom debate over any multi-faceted topic. The structure of the debate encourages students to employ team-work, logic, and courtesy.
Use the PowerPoint Presentation and guided notes before you hold a debate for the first time to walk students through the debate rules, structure, the laws of logic, and logical fallacies. Links to videos are provided for each logical fallacy covered, as well as video clips for students to practice identifying logical fallacies. Logical fallacies addressed—ad hominem, ad ignorantiam, ad populum, argument from authority, circular reasoning, false dichotomy, hasty generalization, red herring, slippery slope, and straw man.
The next time you hold a debate, simply post the handouts on a secure classroom site, such as Google Classroom, or make a packet for students.
