Product Description
This resource is designed for an ESL / EFL classroom but it'll work with any class with students who know a diverse range of languages.

On the first day of school, I always hang up my World Map Poster and this In Your Own Words poster. It's a great ice-breaker and getting to know you activity. And it keeps giving all year long.

On the first day of school, tell students about the poster. Tell them that even though they are in ESL class, we still want to know about their countries and languages.

Ask students to write down how to say the words or phrases on the poster in their own language. Remind them to do this before/after class or during breaks. You'll find they take to it immediately and that the poster is an amazing class-bonding and language awareness tool!

With it, students start:

* chatting and bonding
* teaching each other their languages (and practicing English since that's the only language they share)
* discussing aspects of language, such as register and tone as they talk about differences between Hello and Hi or how they address their friends vs. how they address their grandparents.
* thinking deeply about translation issues such as translating word for word vs. translating for meaning.
* asking you about pragmatics, register, and tone in English!

This zip file includes the following sizes: 36" x 24", A2, Legal, Letter
