To play the Hidden Picture game, I normally have my students complete a worksheet or worksheet packet with a bunch of problems. Once the students all have a chance to finish the problems, I DON’T go over them! That’s when the fun begins. I split my class into 2 different teams and they must all sit close together with their worksheets and pencils. Each team is asked to pick a speaker. No answer or guess can be accepted unless it comes from the speaker. Team 1 is asked a question from the worksheet. The whole team MUST come to a consensus on an answer, then, the speaker says it aloud. If they answer correctly, they can remove a square (or more than one if you choose) from the hidden picture board. If they get it wrong, the other team can steal with a correct response.
I use my projector to project the game and I sit at my desk and slide the squares to the side or delete them since I don’t have a Smart Board...but it would be cool to have the students remove squares themselves if you do have one! Once a square is removed, the team has 5 seconds to guess the hidden puzzle. If they get it correct, I remove the rest of the squares so the whole class can see, otherwise, play goes to the other team and the process repeats until someone guesses the puzzle. I award the team that guesses the puzzle correct, 1 point. After all 8 puzzles are played (or all of your questions have been answered) the team with highest number of points gets some type of prize.
This game is a PowerPoint game, although you don’t play in slide show format. You play just as you see it in the pictures. Once you are done playing the game, DO NOT save changes to the document or you will have to put all of your squares back manually!
All hidden pictures are picture puzzles as you see in the photos. The one picture represents “many thanks.” An answer key is provided for all 8 puzzles in this game.
This game is a wonderful tool and can be used with any topic, worksheet, or review. The best part is, the kids LOVE it and they ask to play it again and again. I have many volumes of this game.
