Classroom Jobs: a Problem-Based Activity
These forty classroom job cards are designed to be flexible as stand-alone cards or as part of a back-to-school activity to create a collaborative community and introduce students to problem-based group work.
Use this activity to keep classroom jobs organized and student-run. In addition, we have provided the forms and directions for students to work with groups to practice reflection, as well as, practice giving and receiving feedback to acknowledge work that is going well and work that needs improvement.
If you plan to involve your students in collaborative learning this year, this makes a great beginning project because the focus is on the group work rather than content.
Students work collaboratively and learn how to:
~create job descriptions specific to your classroom
~organize a team
~organize an on-going project
~give productive feedback
~use feedback and reflection to adjust their group’s productivity
Included in this packet:
~teacher organizational tips for managing the groups
~6 posters with team names and jobs
~6 posters with team names and blank space to add jobs
~1 blank poster to add a team name and jobs
~Brainstorm form for job details
~goals and strategies form
~Group reflection form
We have found that our students needed more exposure to reflection within the context of a group, to give productive feedback in a respectful way, and to learn how to evaluate and make changes based on both reflection and feedback. This project removes the complication of teaching content so that students can focus on the process.
To get the most benefit from this activity we provide the forms and directions for regularly scheduled group meetings for reflection, for feedback and for adjustment to their Plan of Action.
