I love, love, love books, therefore I really work hard at creating an atmosphere in my classroom that entices my students...gets them excited about reading their own "just right" books during Reader's Workshop.
However, before I let the children "shop" for their books in the classroom library, I teach a mini-lesson on what's a "BALANCED READING DIET", and encourage my students to have that "BALANCED READING DIET" in their literacy tubs/book boxes.
With that being said...I use this power point as my lesson. The students get very excited and involved.
After the lesson and in small groups, the kiddos are allowed to pick/shop for their independent reading books. It is SO MUCH FUN watching them pick their books...making sure they are including a "Balanced Reading Diet".
I hope this is a useful tool for you!!! Good Luck!
