Management Bingo is a GREAT tool for encouraging positive behavior in the classroom. It is based on positive reinforcement on several levels. The basic premise of the program is to set-up a hierarchy of rewards for achieving bingos. The bingos are achieved by earning numbers. The earned numbers are removed (or covered) on a hundreds chart (10 x 10). When the class receives enough numbers for an entire row – either vertical, horizontal, or diagonal – they achieve “bingo.”
There are several motivators at work. The first motivator is to set-up the pyramid of rewards. With each successive bingo earned, the rewards get better. The goal is to try to get the “top” reward by getting all of the bingos in that round. Another motivator is earning the numbers themselves. Teachers or parents can determine what behaviors or tasks earns a number. The possibilities are endless. Numbers can be earned for individual, group, or class achievements or behaviors. The positive feature of individual achievement is recognition by the group. If a student goes beyond the norm and is recognized for that, the group is appreciative. This can be very fulfilling and motivating to a student.
One method for tracking earned numbers is to keep tally marks in a designated area of the board. This can be done without disrupting the flow of lessons. At the end of the day, numbers can be chosen based upon how many tally marks are earned. The tally marks provide yet another reinforcer.
To implement this program, you will need a hundreds chart with removable numbers, number cards for selection 1-100, two cups, cover cards to cover the selected numbers on the chart if you choose to cover them instead of remove them. The advantage for covering them is that you don’t have to re-insert the numbers in numerical order to start a new game which can be a tedious task.
