This is a GREAT lesson to do at the beginning of the school year! The students never forget it and I refer to it the rest of the school year. First you must read Dr. Seuss's book - And to think I saw it on Mulberry Street. You then have a classroom discussion on small (minnow) and big (whale) problems. Create an anchor chart - on one side put a picture of a minnow, on the other put a picture of a whale. Cut up the examples of problems on the downloaded worksheets. Have the students discuss and place the problem under the minnow or whale. Some great discussion will come from this lesson! Minnow problems the students can solve themselves. Whale problems is when they need to get the teacher to help. Throughout the year when the students come to you with problems ask them if it is a minnow or a whale!
