Self assessments help students gain ownership of their progress and learn how to set goals. These little slips work wonders in helping students of all ages to make the connection between their actions and their grades. This can be very empowering!
Self Assessment Slips: Hand graded tests or assignments back to students with one of these slips. Have the students self assess whether they are making progress towards their long term goal (getting an A for the term, passing all their tests, etc.). Students get the opportunity to reflect on their actions instead of immediately squirreling away the assignment and forgetting about it.
The slips are a constant reminder of the student’s long term goal (they have to write it each time), and they provide a great reminder of responsibility over one’s goals. This can be highly effective for a lot of students when used consistently.
Exit Slips: At the end of the day, each student fills out an exit slip before leaving the classroom. They must fill in "Today I learned...," "I am confused about...," and "Before I come back to class, I need to..."
