Inspire your students with motivational quotes on their desks that create built-in grouping options to maximize interaction, collaboration, and engagement with a minimal amount of transition time.
In my classroom, I have student desks arranged in six groups of six because I like having students work in pairs or trios--but any configuration works. I copy the quotes onto six different colors so that EACH TABLE has a quote that has been copied onto a red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple card.
I like the set that includes numbers because it ties into my chromebook check-out system. I have included both numbered and unnumbered sets for your use. Print the cards with the numbers on them in the same six colors that you used for your desks, and hang them in your room to create “meeting areas.” Students who have a red quote card on their desks go to the red card, students who have a yellow quote card on their desks go to the yellow card, etc. This year I am experimenting with whiteboard contact paper on the walls so that color groups can collaborate more readily.
Once you affix the quotes to each seat using your chosen colors and hang those colors on your classroom walls, you will have four built in systems for grouping and interaction:
1. Have students remain in their table groups to work in pairs and trios
2. Have students meet in their “color groups” to discuss a topic and record their understanding
3. Have students agree or disagree on a topic by standing under the “1” or the “6”
4. Have students rate their degree of understanding with six being the highest degree of understanding. Pair the 1’s and 6’s together for peer to peer support.
