Class participation is 25% of my students' marking period grade. When I began teaching, I found it very difficult to account for this portion of their grade. It seemed very subjective to grade it at the end of the marking period with only my memory and attendance sheets to apply. I was also struggling with classroom management and looking for a way to positively reinforce my students and hold misbehaving students accountable. I created a daily participation rubric for my students based on a five point system. I distributed it and gave each student a grade every day. It helped at the end of the marking period to justify their participation grade and also in class on a daily basis as I was able to use it as a reminder to misbehaving students. Students wanted to know what their grade was every day.
