The Classroom Map lesson plan addresses California Department of Education’s Common Core standards for second grade history-social science content standards in which “students demonstrate map skills by describing the absolute and relative locations of people, places and environments” and “locate on a simple letter-number grid system the specific locations and geographic features in their neighborhood or community (e.g., map of the classroom, the school)” (California Department of Education, 2000).
To use the lesson plan, simply print the plan and make copies of the included handouts. You will need a document reader, the included handouts, and paper and writing tools (such as pencils, crayons, markers, etc) for students.
Suggested accommodations and modifications for exceptional students have been included in the lesson plan. Informal assessments can be performed throughout the lesson to ensure proper pacing; independent work can be used for summative assessment needs.
