My mentor teacher LOVED this creative activity!
It was originally part of my The Color Purple by Alice Walker Unit - 5 Lesson Plan Bundle, which focuses on understanding the significance of quilting as an American art form. However; in this stand-alone free packet, I've provided a new lesson plan using the play The Star Quilter by William S. Yellowrobe Jr. in which students research the importance of a Star Quilt.
The beauty of the Classroom Quilt Project, however you use it, is that it can successfully integrate art, writing, history/culture, and math into one "classroom building" activity that students any age absolutely love!
Have students create a section of a class community quilt. Students can draw or create images that they feel are relevant to their life and then the teacher will “stitch” the papers together either with staples, yarn, or paper clips and display the quilt in class. Students are given an opportunity for self-reflection by writing a one-paragraph reflection on why they designed their individual piece of the class quilt the way they did.
This REVISED compressed file (.zip) includes everything you need to put together a simple Quilt Packet for your students.
