Rewards in the classroom are a great motivator, but prize boxes are sometimes more trouble than they are worth! This reward binder is my solution to the never-ending problems that my prize box used to cause me (broken trinkets, spending my own money on "junk", kids playing with toy prizes when they were supposed to put them in their backpack, etc.) I converted to the prize binder eight years ago and I never looked back! Now, students who have good behavior go shopping in my binder and choose a prize that is easy to implement, usually at no cost to me, and super exciting for the student!
This product contains 45 different rewards that you can use with your students in lieu of a prize box...or if you aren't ready to part with your prize box, then it could always be an addition to your prize box. Remarkably 80% of the prizes in this binder are absolutely free to implement. There are a few that cost money, but they are inexpensive. Also, some of the prizes that cost money will only cost you money once. After the initial investment they will last you a lifetime of teaching!
To set up the binder you will need to print out the large pages. Slip them into clear plastic pockets and place them into a three-ring binder. You can also print out the cover page and binder spines for your binder.
I have provided small coupons that you can use in conjunction with the reward binder. You can organize the coupons in tackle boxes, bead boxes, or nuts/bolts boxes. When a student chooses a reward you give them a coupon to take home so that his/her parents know what reward they earned. This also comes in handy as a reminder to students who chose a prize that requires them to dress up the following day or to bring something from home.
As I mentioned above, I've used this packet in my classroom for eight years! The kids always talk about how much they love the prizes/coupons all the time! I love that most of these rewards don't cost me any money or time. For example, a pajama day for a student won't cost you any money, because the reward entitles your student to wear their pajamas to school. There were a few that cost me initial set-up money, but the costs were minimal. Depending on your classroom supplies and parent donations, you may not need to spend any money. For example: I already owned sparkly crayons, gel pens, and smelly markers for my "super supplies" prize, which is an extra special pencil box that is filled with awesome school supplies.
