This is a simple assignment designed to get students thinking about the learning environment of your classroom and student behavior that is conducive to the establishment of that environment.
It asks students to come up with 5-7 important rules that they feel need to be in place to enhance the learning/social environment of the classroom. The first 5 rule ideas require the students to write out a justification for the importance of the particular rule.
The homework can be collected and the ideas that are important, novel, or repeatedly listed, can be presented to the class for further discussion.
This exercise gives students a say in the formation of classroom rules, which in turn gives them ownership of some of the rules, and results in the rules being more closely followed.
