This is a fun activity for orientation night or the first day of school! Help your students to familiarize themselves with their new classroom by giving them a classroom scavenger hunt. Knowing where essential items are located will help your students feel more confident in the classroom, and will help them in establishing beginning-of-year routines.
I use the Classroom Scavenger Hunt activity to introduce my new fourth graders to their classroom during our school open house. As each student enters the room, I greet them warmly and give them a scavenger hunt page and a pencil. As they find the items on the list, I am able to get to know student families and answer questions. The last item on the list is our classroom library. Once the student finds the library, he or she is prompted to browse for a while and choose a book to leave on his/her table for the morning. My new students are more comfortable entering the classroom on the first day of school knowing where everything is located, and knowing that their chosen book is waiting for them to read.
