o Our Group Rubric-rubric teams (or groups) fill out to evaluate themselves (I put one for each group in a plastic sleeve and they use a dry erase marker on it.)
o Group Voice-o-Meters-These are used during group time. Team members can point if their voices are too loud OR too soft for group time. Their goal is to have a “Just Right” voice level.

*How they work:
o First, you start out by modeling your expectations for:
-Teacher Time: this is the time you or a student is “running” the class
-Work Time: this is your students’ independent work time
-Group Time: this is when your students are working in pairs or groups
o Then, you evaluate your students’ performance using the corresponding rubrics.
o After you students “get it down”, you have them start evaluating themselves. This will lead to a truly student-centered classroom with your students being “in charge” in a productive way.

o Tasks that Prompt Higher Order Thinking/Conversations:
-Doesn’t Belong?: put up 3-4 items; students must justify which one doesn’t belong (it’s best when there is an argument for each one)
-Answer of the Day: students work backwards to create equations or questions from the answer
-Math Detective: students look at a prompt and write a question they’d like to ask the class
o Recording Their Thoughts:
-My Ideas/Others’ Ideas: students write their ideas and others’ ideas (gets them to talk and compare)
-KWL: can be used the same in math as in reading (gets students to talk about their growth)
-Think Pair Share Square: a way to share their own thoughts, share with a partner, share with a small group, and share with the whole class

**These get students involved and keep them involved in academic conversations.
