The Thankful Journal originated at home with my own children when they were very young as a means to put a positive spin on dinner time and make sure that we all were focusing on something positive that happened within our day. My children started participating as soon as they could point or utter a word so it became somewhat of a journaling of their language sample too. We always wrote down EXACTLY what was said which makes it so fun to read. It was a wonderful backup for myself too as I can recount times I was thankful that one of my lovelies learned a skill that I was able to write down to reference someday when I finally fill in those blanks in the baby books (yikes). As the children continued to grow, they became excited about the prospect of writing their own thankful thought in the journal which then became a writing sample too.
One of the most popular rewards in my speech room is to eat lunch with me. I frequently have visitors that join groups and watch while they are eating their lunch. Students often bring peers to join them and I have the wonderful opportunity to meet so many great new people. One day while talking with a lunch group, I told them about my Thankful Journal at home and we decided that we should have one at school too! One that wonderful afternoon, our Thankful Journal was born. Students were so eager to share their thoughts and log their entries. It was a beautiful moment as my worlds collided and I witnessed their pure joy. As the year progressed, it became apparent how integral our Thankful Journal had become as various groups would seek it out to complete their entries with excitement. One sunny afternoon when we decided to picnic outside, they insisted on going back in to retrieve our cherished journal so that we would not forget our entries. We logged our entries in a lined notebook, however this year I created special entry pages designated specifically for our Thankful Journal that can be copied and bound for use. There are 2 different journal entry pages so that you can copy them double sided and save on paper. Whether you are an SLP or teacher, I believe that a Thankful Journal will be a welcome addition to your classroom for your students to collaboratively create because there is ALWAYS something to be thankful for (even on those days that we have to dig deep)!
Includes both color and B&W Journal cover pages. Entry pages are B&W to allow for multiple copies.
