I created this timeline for 5th Grade, but is also reviews some fourth grade and throws up a preview of some sixth and up material. The point here is that during the morning, I put out a card, tell the story what happened in this day in history. We then place the calendar date on a time line that spreads from 1420-2020. This activity has really helped my students hear the stories of history we often gloss over or don't get time to cover. Having historical events pop up, on say December 1, give us a chance to discuss that date in history... the arrest of Rosa Parks, in this case, and place that card before man lands on the moon and after US declares War on Mexico.
I formatted this to be cards, such that, you, as a teacher, can pick and chose which historical events to highlight. If some are inappropriate for your class, skip them. There are plenty to choose from the the point here is that students become intrigued by our rich and wonderful history.
Also, there is a set of picture cards you can buy to go with each date. Buy these cards first, try them out and them buy the pictures and graphics to enhance!
