Ceramics students designed coffee mugs for famous artists! This clay project begins as an introduction to slab construction, then the cylinder is transformed into an artist-inspired mug. This project is usually introduced later in the course, after pinch and coil construction projects have been introduced, and students have a thorough understanding of how to score and add slip to connect pieces together. Files included: Project description (.docx), project steps (.docx), sample artist list of 23 artists(.pdf), rubric (.docx), two photo examples (.jpg), stages of an idea (.jpg), display description (.docx).
This project assumes the teacher has access to clay and a kiln, and a basic understanding of clay.
Materials needed are clay, slip (clay and water mixture), for rolling slabs: two wooden strips (dowel rods or a stack of rulers works as well) and a rolling pin, a needle tool for roughening the clay (a fork works well), a plastic knife for cutting the slabs to the proper length, a variety of sculpting tools, brushes, glaze or paint.
