These handouts are used as an introduction to coil building. The final product is a coil cylinder that is 8 coils tall including the coil base. Handouts included in this packet are: The Golden Rules of Coil Building (.jpg), An invaluable Coil Practice page with proper coil thickness and teacher sign off (.jpg), Coil Project Description Page (.jpg), Coil Comment Card (.jpg), Coil Rubric (.docx), Coil Lids Ideas Handout (.jpg), 3 Photos of Finished Examples, and a link to a demonstration video.
This project assumes the teacher has access to clay and a kiln, and a basic understanding of clay.
Materials needed are clay, slip (clay and water mixture), a needle tool (a fork works well), a plastic knife for cutting the coils to the proper length, a smooth surface to roll coils on, glaze or paint.
