This unit is for Kindergarten or First grade, working with clay. It is designed to be the students first time working with clay. We discuss the parts of the fish, the texture of a fish's scales and what you can do with clay. I give each student a day to get used to working with clay. They cut the clay with a popsicle stick, add texture with the curved edge of the popsicle stick, and press lightly with a marker cap for a fish's eye. They also create a cut out of a fish starting with an oval. The following class period, I give each student a slab of clay (pre-cut). They place their cut out fish on top of it, then cut out the fish using their popsicle stick. They add texture and add an eye, just like we practiced! After they are fired, we paint (or glaze) them using primary colors.
