This packet for a beautiful classic folk song includes:
• Printables for each verse
• The song sung simply on MP3
This gorgeous, plaintive song I think is one of the most beautiful folk songs I know. As it goes through each verse, listeners feel the crucial importance as well as the emotional need for family and loved ones. So many children do not get that individual attention and care, even when there are good intentions. Students discover a correlation between someone helping them get clean and being loved.
As a classroom lesson, I found children amused by the scenario of everyone in the story doing their part for the young children. They even laugh sometimes at some of the words. But in discussion, the class can get the inner meaning through the teacher’s pertinent questions.
I call this song a ‘yodeling’ song because it can be sung with a falsetto at the peak of each verse. Other songs like this are “I Love My Little Rooster” and “Wimoweh.”
As a language arts lesson, there is sequence, repeated words, and familiar words.
NOTE: The preview is a downloadable MP3 snippet of the full recording. It contains the first and last verses only.
